Läste Days of war, nights of love från 2001 av amerikanska anarkistkollektivet CrimethInc. nyligen. Jag minns CrimethInc. lite från förr utan att egentligen ha haft så bra koll, kanske läst nån artikel nån gång, kände till boken och minns lite vagt en del av kritiken. Ungefär så. Den har samlat damm i min bokhylla i några år sen jag hittade den på Myrorna för fem spänn.

Jag blev glad av att läsa den, den var väl sådär naiv, lättsam, egentligen sa den mig inte särskilt mycket nytt. Men det var nått med den hoppfulla fuck off-attityden, uppmaningen till att tänka själv och göra något själv som jag gillade. Hela boken känns lite som texten till Ebba Gröns ’Va ska du bli?’.
Och dessutom punkigt paketerad där typsnitt och textstorlek blandas, kollage, planscher och serier varvas med de korta texterna.

Efter ett tag slog det mig att den väl är att betrakta som en anarkistisk självhjälpsbok, främst riktad till unga. Även om världen förändrats mycket på de nästan 25 år som gått sen den kom ut så tror jag den är läsvärd för kidsen idag, och säkert bättre än Mia Thörnblom, Jordan B. Petersen eller vilka som nu är alternativen inom genren.

Så gör världen en tjänst – skaffa Days of war nights of love och ge den till en rebellisk ung person.

Men så på slutet så hajade jag faktiskt till lite. I kapitlet ’T is for technology’ finns en liten brevväxling. Det börjar med att någon svarar sci-fi författaren William Gibson (vars brev tyvärr inte finns med) och därefter följer en kritik av svaret till Gibson. Och detta lilla brev, författat av CrimethInc.s Stella Nera, är så spot on att jag häpnar.

Det här är alltså publicerat 2001. Vid den här tiden fanns det ändå en del teknikoptimism från vänster, jag har tidigare skrivit om piratgrejen och det fanns en hype kring Indymedia och andra alternativa nätmedier som kunde utmana etablissemanget, ja hela internet sågs fortfarande som något hoppfullt, subversivt och potentiellt farligt – just anarkistiskt var ett ord som ofta förekom.

Men Stella Nera var inte imponerad, istället förutspådde hon träffsäkert hela utvecklingen mot den sociala medierdystopi vi idag lever i.

Jag har läst den här lilla texten om och om igen fler gånger men kommer på mig själv med att inte kunna tillföra något vettigt själv. Den känns liksom så uttömmande i sin enkelhet. Så tänker att jag helt enkelt klistrar in den i sin helhet och låter det få bli sista ordet med en förhoppning om att mina kära läsare blir inspirerade till att fundera och kanske kommentera själva:

”It was once said that the map is not the terrain. The speaker meant to point to the limits of human abstraction in friction with full reality. But we are now being herded with electronic prods from the terrain to the map, from the real to the virtual—soon there will be no friction! Simulated electronic space is a map, merely a map: the better to simplify, rationalize, describe, monitor, predict, propagandize, contain, and control you with. Cyberspace is a closed playpen, where everything is permitted, but nothing is possible. Use cyberspace to get information? When you use cyberspace, you get in formation.

Interactive communication has become a form of invisible control. Cyberspace integrates us into a neural network; together, we become the extended brain of the technological system. The more interconnected the population, the faster propaganda diffuses. Yesterday’s control by communication: politicians polled the public, processed the results, and adjusted their rhetoric to correct image problems. Today’s control by communication: the outfitting of employees with pagers, cell phones, email accounts, voice mail … it is interesting to note how the current theme of propaganda is that consumers need more information—and therefore must not only plug themselves into the system, but must also carry an array of communication devices with them wherever they go.

And the future? The days of watching the Spectacle are almost over. The audience storms the stage: now we are the Spectacle, and propaganda is obsolete.
